Our partial hospital program is for those who need intensive treatment but not in a 24/7 inpatient setting. We have options in several different locations for your convenience and offer mental health and dual diagnosis treatment for adults and adolescents.

About our partial hospitalization programs

Bournewood Health Systems is a behavioral health organization offering a continuum of mental health and co-occurring care for adults and adolescents, including Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHPs) in Brookline, Dedham, Lowell, and Woburn.

Our PHPs are used as a step-down transition from inpatient level of care and can provide intensive treatment as an alternative to a psychiatric hospitalization. Each program is comprised of a multidisciplinary treatment team of psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, social workers, mental health counselors, and rehabilitation specialists.

Our programs are open Monday through Friday and run from about 9am-2pm. Lengths of stay are individualized to patients’ specific needs but average about 10 days. Adolescent PHPs accept patients aged 12-18 years old, and Adult PHPs accept patients aged 18+. Bournewood accepts Medicare, MassHealth (Medicaid), and most other private insurance and managed care plans. Upon completion of PHP, patients are typically referred to traditional outpatient therapy and medication management.

TREATMENT ORIENTATION & APPROACH

Our PHPs promote recovery with evidenced-based and trauma-informed treatment approaches to target acute symptoms of mental illness and substance use conditions. Our therapy model emphasizes a focus on scientifically proven behavioral health treatments including Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Our main treatment components include group therapy, patient education, medication management, and individual meetings to discuss aftercare referrals, safety planning, relapse prevention, and school re-entry. Our adolescent programs also provide daily tutoring with a licensed teacher to ensure that students do not fall behind in their studies.
